Firefighter!

Firefighters spend much of their time at their fire stations, ready to respond when an emergency happens.

You must have a high school diploma in order to become a firefighter. Entry level firefighters are sent to a fire fighters academy for several weeks.

Firefighting is becoming a competitive career, fire fighters earn steady wages and gain a sense of honor from their work

Based on your research, would you recommend this career to a friend? Why or Why not?

I would recommend this career to a friend who wants to make a difference in the world

This career makes a difference in society by ensuring Americans safety and security in the event of a fire.

Candidate #3 Senator Rodriguez

     Scenario 1;
    Good evening,
     Yesterday we faced an interesting opportunity, several interest groups had pressured me to sign the English language bill and in return they had offered to provide much needed support for our states technology sector bill. While our tech sector still needs support, I rejected the interest group offers and decide to support our states growing minorities by opposing the English language bill. I will be speaking at a protest rally against the passing of the English language bill in the coming weeks. It is my hope that the bill will not be passed as it hampers the ability for immigrants to assimilate into American society. I want to thank my constituents for their continued support, and I hope to become your senator in the near future.
Thank you, Senator Rodriguez

     Response to Scenario 1;
     Good evening,
     The protest rally was a great success. Thank you to all of the demonstrators who attended. I am very happy that the event received so much media coverage, that will go a long way in helping us toward our goal. Thank you, Senator Rodriguez

     Scenario 2;
     Good afternoon,
     The welfare agencies in our state are large and serve a vast community with their different needs. In recent weeks many people have spoken out against the inefficiency of the program across the nation. Congress is looking to pass a new welfare reform act. It seems that although most people support the idea of welfare reform, many are skeptical of the new bill and feel that it may prevent welfare support from reaching those in need. I have come to conclude that I must support the welfare reform act. Our states welfare program is riddled with corruption and fraud which affects everyone dependant on welfare. I will support the welfare reform act.
Thank you, Senator Rodriguez

     Response to Scenario 2;
     Good evening,
     It seems my decision to support the welfare reform act has been well received by many of my constituents and by those who were undecided on the matter of welfare reform. I am glad that many see the value inherent in the welfare reform act. Please continue to support me in my efforts for reelection.
Thank you, Senator Rodriguez

     Scenario 3
     Good afternoon,
     This morning I was asked to speak at an annual convention for an interest group which promotes limiting immigration and increased enforcement of border control. While I agree we should enforce border control, I do not support the limiting of immigration. I have declined the invitation to the interest group. Thank you for following me on my road to reelection.
Senator Rodriguez

     Response to Scenario 3
     Good evening,
     I am pleased that the local media has covered my decision to decline the invitation. It is good to have such positive press just days before reelection.
Thanks, Senator Rodriguez

    Scenario 4
    Good evening,
A major A list celebrity has recently given me their endorsement. I have graciously accepted their endorsement and left it at that.
Thanks, Senator Rodriguez

     Election Result; Successful Re-election

Did you agree with the outcome of your simulation experience? Why or why not?

I agree with my outcome. I did do the simulation a couple times, and I may have figured out what the positive choices were, but I have no reason to disagree with the result of my simulation experience.
  1. What might have changed the outcome? I suppose the point is that if I had not worked in the favor of my constituents, I would not have been reelected. (That says a lot about politics dosen't it...)
  2. How do the scenarios compare to the local politics of your congressional district? I suppose I can most relate to the scenario where the senator comes from a state which grows oranges because I am from a state which grows oranges...
  3. What do you feel has the greatest impact on the election results- local or national issues? And why? It seems like local issues impact election results; well the people really. In this system of government it seems that the politician must bend to the will of the people in order to hold office. So, the nature of politicians in office should speak to the nature of the people right? bleak thought...
  4. Do you agree or disagree with this? Well, the simulation seems to be fairly accurate so; yes. I do.
  5. How do local issues affect the ability of Congress make national decisions? The individual's political persuasions and choices subtly pull local political decision making in one way or another, and local choices affect state choices, state persuasions affect national decision making. It's a sort of reverse domino effect leading up to the top of a decision making pyramid with national issues argued at the top...

FLVS Lesson 3.08

     The American Government should not be able to wiretap your phone without a warrant. Such surveillance measures infringe on Americans ability to freely communicate with one another. The USA Patriot Act  signed on October 24, 2001, was "intended to give the military, police, CIA, FBI and other law enforcement agencies more resources and ways to find information about potential terrorist threats in the United States." Many Americans are uncomfortable with the idea of the Patriot Act because it violates allows the government the freedom to attain personal information about it's citizens. Unfortunatley, "in March 2006, the Patriot Act was reauthorized by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush." This makes the Patriot Act a permenant part of American law. Restrictions have been placed on the Patriot Act, but President George W. Bush "issued a 'signing statement' which basically stated that he was not obligated to follow the laws if he felt it necessary for national security."

FLVS 3.04 BLOG

     The "Tinker Standard" was created in 1969. It allows students in schools today a degree of freedom of expression. The "Tinker Standard" was created in response to three students who organized a peaceful protest against the Vietnam war.
     The students, John Tinker, his sister Mary Beth, and Christopher Eckhart wore black armbands symbolizing their anti-war sentiments. Their public school promptly banned armbands of any kind and threatened suspension of any student who should refuse to obey the no armband policy.
     The Tinker family sued the school. The case was taken to the Supreme Court. The Tinker family won the case and the "Tinker Standard" was established. The standard affects the creation and enforcement of school dress codes.
