The "Tinker Standard" was created in 1969. It allows students in schools today a degree of freedom of expression. The "Tinker Standard" was created in response to three students who organized a peaceful protest against the Vietnam war.
The students, John Tinker, his sister Mary Beth, and Christopher Eckhart wore black armbands symbolizing their anti-war sentiments. Their public school promptly banned armbands of any kind and threatened suspension of any student who should refuse to obey the no armband policy.
The Tinker family sued the school. The case was taken to the Supreme Court. The Tinker family won the case and the "Tinker Standard" was established. The standard affects the creation and enforcement of school dress codes.
